Fredonia boil order may be lifted Thursday morning

Fredonia’s latest boil water border should end Thursday morning, village officials said today.
“We had a disinfection problem at the plant,” chief water treatment plant operator Luis Fred said at a Board of Trustees workshop. “Parts were ordered, they just weren’t shipped. So I went and picked them up yesterday, repaired the disinfection system, got our samples collected, so now we’re just waiting to be cleared from (the Chautauqua County Department of Health).”
Water systems under boil orders in New York State must have consecutive clean tests before the orders are lifted. Fred said tests were conducted last night and this morning. Fredonia is obviously hoping those tests come back clean.
“There is a possibility that by tomorrow, somewhere around the 10 a.m. area, we get that green light and we get rid of this,” Mayor Michael Ferguson said. “I thank the public for their patience, and remind them that nobody is as frustrated about this as the people in this room are.”
Fire Chief Joshua Myers said firefighters delivered 103 cases of water to especially needy residents. The fire department used a short questionnaire to determine need.
The water delivery was driven in part by the snowfall over the weekend, which was not entirely cleared when the boil order came down Tuesday morning.
“For the most part, the snow emergency is done,” Ferguson said. “This is for people who are seniors who can’t get out and about. We remembered that we had those pallets sitting in DPW, so we thought it was a good idea to get that out to people in need. And those are people in the Fredonia-Pomfret area we would normally sell water to.”
