Outgoing Fredonia trustees say goodbye
Fredonia Trustees Nicole Siracuse and Michelle Twichell said farewell Monday at their last village board meeting.
Siracuse did not run for re-election while Twichell lost a Democratic Party primary to Christine Cruz Keefe and Leeann Lazarony. Cruz Keefe and Lazarony later defeated Dave Bird in a three-way race for two Board of Trustees seats.
“I just want to thank the community for allowing me to have four years to serve my community,” Siracuse said. “It’s been very fulfilling. I’m proud of the things we were able to accomplish. My full-time job does not allow me to participate in political campaigns any more. So this is where my journey ends. But it’s been great.”
Sam Drayo declared when Siracuse finished, “I’d like to thank Trustee Twichell for her courage standing up for the village and its taxpayers.” Drayo and Twichell are in agreement on numerous issues, such as the village’s Portland Pomfret Dunkirk wastewater contract and its attempts to acquire water elsewhere, where Siracuse is in the opposition.
Twichell complained a little about the recently approved PPD contract, which she thinks shortchanges village taxpayers. She then said, “It was an honor and a privilege to be a trustee here in the village. It was my second time being a village trustee.
“I feel really good about representing the people. That’s what it’s about — representing the taxpayers of the village of Fredonia. I feel that I was lucky enough to come here and represent people and be their voice. I wish much success to the two new trustees coming in. I hope they can pick up where I left off… It’s not an easy job, as you know. We get phone calls all the time, I had a couple myself today.”
Twichell concluded, “I do love this village. I hope it continues in the right direction.”
Mayor Michael Ferguson thanked both Siracuse and Twichell for their service. He said Cruz Keefe and Lazarony would take their oaths of office for the new Board of Trustees, along with returning members Ben Brauchler, Jon Espersen and Paul Wandel, on New Year’s Day. A ceremony will be held at Village Hall at a time not yet determined.
