Gowanda grants tenure to two teachers

GOWANDA — A pair of Gowanda teachers – Michael O’Rourke and Krysta Brind’Amour – were granted tenure at the latest Board of Education meeting.

O’Rourke is professionally certified in Health Education and serves as a Nutrition and Health Science Teacher.

His tenure status is effective Jan. 3, 2026. O’Rourke was recommended for tenure by Middle School Principal Darlene Silleman.

Silleman wrote in a letter of recommendation, “Michael O’Rourke exemplifies professionalism, reliability, and a genuine passion for teaching. I fully and confidently recommend him for tenure, as he has proven to be an invaluable asset to our school and a teacher who consistently makes a meaningful impact on student learning.”

O’Rourke was defined as a “student-centered teacher who prioritizes the academic, social, and emotional needs of every learner.” He was commended for his proactive approach with students who require additional support, as well as his collaboration with colleagues and positive contributions throughout the school community.

Brind’Amour, a Special Education Teacher, is professionally certified in Students with Disabilities (Birth – Grade 2) and Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6), and initially certified in Early Childhood Education (Birth – Grade 2). Her tenure status is effective Jan. 14, 2026. Brind’Amour was recommended for tenure by Elementary Principal Chelsea Kroll.

Kroll wrote in a letter of recommendation, “Mrs. Brind’Amour excels at creating a classroom environment where students feel safe, supported, and willing to take risks. Her calm presence and steady encouragement foster confidence, independence, and perseverance in her learners. She demonstrates extraordinary patience, meeting students where they are while guiding them forward with compassion and clarity.”

Kroll added, “Her belief in her students is evident in her careful planning, consistent routines, and the individualized supports she puts in place to help every learner succeed.” Brind’Amour was commended for maintaining high expectations for students through a balance of “warmth with rigor.”

The Board of Education also approved several other personnel moves at its latest meeting. Tracy Himes was appointed as a probationary Keyboard Specialist II, while Dustin Hardman was appointed as a Substitute Teacher and Teaching Assistant. Hayley Osterstuck resigned from the role of Keyboard Specialist II, while Trevor Krawczyk resigned as a Substitute Teacher, Teaching Assistant, and School Monitor. A series of volunteer coaches were also appointed, pertaining to the wrestling and boys basketball programs.

Also approved at the recent meeting was a transportation contract with WNY Bus Co. to Gowanda Schools under the McKinney-Vento Act in the amount of $878 per day.

The Board approved the 2026-2027 School Budget Development Calendar, which notes a presentation of the first draft of the budget at the regular Board of Education meeting scheduled for March 11. The Board anticipates the adoption of the 2026-2027 School Budget at a Board of Education meeting scheduled on April 1.

The next regular meeting of the Gowanda Board of Education is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 6:30 p.m.
