UPDATE: Travel advisory issued for north county region

Travel in Dunkirk, Fredonia and across portions of northern Chautauqua County is treacherous this afternoon.

Due to anticipated hazardous winter weather conditions, a Travel Advisory is in effect for a number of north county municipalities.

It is in effect for the village of Fredonia and the town of Pomfret, continuing through Wednesday at 6 p.m., fire chief Josh Myers said.

Later, the city of Dunkirk issued a travel advisory until further notice. “Non-essential travel is strongly discouraged,” the notice issued by the city said. Hazardous conditions at the moment include: strong winds and heavy, blowing snow may cause drifting, downed trees, and power lines.

Keeping vehicles off the road will help facilitate snow plowing and ensure emergency vehicles can access the streets safely. Residents also are asked to follow alternate parking regulations to assist with snow removal efforts and allow easier access for emergency responders.

A travel advisory is issued when conditions pose a real or potential risk to motorists and may make travel difficult. Residents are urged to limit unnecessary travel, allow extra time, and use caution if driving is required. Roads may be slick, visibility may be reduced, and conditions can change rapidly.

Emergency services and street department crews will continue to monitor conditions. The public is encouraged to stay informed through official channels and prioritize safety during this advisory period.

Starting at $3.50/week.
