Adding to connections: Centaur Stride plans new caregiver program

How often are we presented with opportunities that can change our lives, and for some reason, miss them? Here’s another chance.

For years, Centaur Stride has quietly transformed lives through the powerful connection between humans and horses — an impact that reaches far beyond those with physical disabilities. Time and again, participants of all ages and backgrounds discover that working with horses brings unexpected benefits: steadier heart rates, improved emotional balance, stronger muscles, sharper thinking, and, perhaps most importantly, renewed confidence and meaningful relationships.

In partnership with the Mental Health Association of Chautauqua County, Centaur Stride is launching a respite program for caregivers (not daycare) of children with disabilities and their siblings, ages 5 to 21. By providing engaging programs for the children, parents are liberated to explore other options for self-care. The first six-week session begins Saturday, April 4, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. While free, the program requires a six-week commitment and offers progressive equine-assisted therapy experiences, designed for multiple abilities.

Caregivers (parent or guardian, not aides) are required to remain on-site during sessions — not as a limitation, but as an opportunity. They may choose to engage with the horses alongside their children, connect with other parents, or simply take a much-needed moment to rest, read, or dabble in creative activities with other caregivers.

Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Call the barn at (716) 326-4318, or see our Facebook post with a QR code, or online at  https://form.jotform.com/260813401247045 .

As with all Centaur Stride programs, the number of people receiving services is directly related to volunteer availability. The more helping hands, the more individuals the program can serve.

Volunteers are the backbone of all our programs. Whether assisting with sessions, helping around the barn, or simply offering a welcoming presence, each extra set of hands makes light work. Just as importantly, the sense of camaraderie built among volunteers is its own reward. Are you looking for purpose? We’ll help you find it at Centaur Stride.

We are so thankful for grant awards that make participation free or help with projects beyond our capabilities. Grants are never guaranteed and are very competitive.

To help sustain and expand its programs, Centaur Stride is currently hosting two key fundraisers.

The 17th Annual Healing Horses Walk-a-thon will take place Sunday, April 12, at the barn. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m., with the walk scheduled from 2 to 3 p.m. Several riders have already signed up and are actively seeking sponsors. Funds raised will go toward one of the organization’s most pressing needs: hay, which alone is expected to cost $10,000 this year.

To register as a participant or team, or support a rider’s page, email  Holly.reslink@centaurstride.org or go to the fundraiser website:

Checks can be sent to: Centaur Stride, PO Box 174, Westfield, NY 14787 before April 12th in memory or honor of someone. Offline donations will be manually added to online totals.

Other business and organization sponsors include the Westfield Women’s Organization and Ridg-U-Rak. For Tee shirt, sweater or hoodie orders go to:  https://apparel.tripleemfg.com/store/centaur-stride-walkathon/

Glow Bingo will light up the Sherman Fire Hall on Friday, May 8, doors open at 5:30 and games begin at 6:30 p.m. Known for its impressive basket raffles, donated prizes from local businesses and friends of Centaur Stride, this event promises both fun and attests to community spirit. With Mother’s Day just around the corner, many of the raffle baskets are themed for Mother’s Day Gifts.

Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.

Horses have a remarkable ability to ground us, challenge us, and connect with us.

Centaur Stride bridges the gap of dreaming of owning your own horse and having all the privileges of connecting with a horse. By shouldering the responsibility of horse care and keeping fees well below operating costs — fees sometimes even fully covered through grants or (outside) special funds for people with disabilities — Centaur Stride makes these life-changing experiences accessible to the wider community.

The after-school Horse Club has returned for its second year with Ripley school, with enthusiastic young riders already back in the saddle.

Plans are also underway to expand access, hopefully with other school districts, but for now, a new open-enrollment after-school horse club is available for independent riders ages 8 to 18 (may have a leader at start with a reasonable expected goal of independence). These group lessons cover horsemanship in depth, including riding, and offer a unique way for young people — and their parents — to connect, learn, and grow together. (Parents for children under 12 must stay on premises while their child is here).

Ultimately, Centaur Stride’s work serves as a reminder: sometimes the opportunity to improve our lives is already within reach. All it takes is the willingness to grab hold of it — and perhaps, just a little encouragement to follow through. While we dangle the carrot to stir up interest, the horses are patiently waiting, and love carrots. Thank you for your support.

Starting at $3.50/week.
