City of Dunkirk eyes permanent Main St. closure near Wells

The city of Dunkirk may close a portion of Main Street, at Wells Enterprises’ request.

The Common Council is set to consider authorizing a city Planning Board study on the closure today. The Planning Board has the matter on its agenda at a meeting the following day, Wednesday.

The closure would discontinue Main Street from the south right of way for Marsden Street to the north property line of 820 Main Street.

Wells is constructing a large addition to its ice cream plant in the area of the closure. According to the council resolution, “Wells Enterprises claims a need to own a section of Main Street public right of way between Newton and Marsden streets to provide employee and visitor parking as well as provide safe staging and logistics for semi-trucks serving the manufacturing facility.”

The portion of Main Street in question has been closed for months to help out Wells’ expansion project. City officials originally promised the closure would be temporary.

Starting at $3.50/week.
