First-degree murder charge added after last week’s city standoff
An additional charge of first-degree attempted murder has been placed on a Dunkirk man who was involved in a more than seven-hour standoff on March 24.
Dunkirk Police Department on Tuesday announced the additional charge for Christopher Marcinkowski, 39, of 312 Franklin Ave., after he shot a Dunkirk police officer in the chest while officers executed a search warrant at his address.
The Southern Tier Regional Task Force, which includes members of the Dunkirk Police Department, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, and Jamestown Police Department were serving the search warrant as part of an ongoing investigation into narcotics activity. During the operation, the Dunkirk Police Department’s Special Response Team made entry into the residence. At that time, an occupant, Marcinkowski, discharged a firearm, striking an officer in the chest. The round was stopped by the officer’s ballistic vest, which resulted in non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital for evaluation and later released.
Following the shooting, Marcinkowski took a female hostage inside the residence and barricaded himself inside the home. After approximately seven hours of negotiations, Marcinkowski exited the residence with the female and surrendered without further incident.
Marcinkowski is a convicted felon who is prohibited from possessing firearms and has previously served time in State and Federal Prison for firearm and drug-related offenses.
In addition to three counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, Marcinkowski has additionally been charged in coordination with the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office.
Marcinkowski was arraigned in Dunkirk City Court Tuesday on the attempted murder charge and remanded to the Chautauqua County Jail without bail. Bail previously set on the weapon possession charges was increased to $1 million.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional federal charges are expected.
The Dunkirk Police Department extends its gratitude to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, Jamestown Police Department, Fredonia Police Department, CCSO and JPD SWAT teams, New York State Police, the District Attorney’s Office, Chautauqua County Mental Health, Dunkirk Fire Department, Chautauqua County Emergency Services, Chautauqua County Forensic Investigation Team, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiation Team and Drone Teams.
Officers also thanked Ellman’s Garage for the use of their property, food, water, and the overall hospitality shown to all the agencies involved.
