Fredonia boil order could end this morning

The village of Fredonia’s boil order could be lifted late this morning.

The village Office of Emergency Management reported Monday evening that “the Department of Health has collected both required water samples from our distribution system. These samples are currently undergoing a 24-hour incubation period at the lab for further analysis.

“We expect to provide Update No. 3 (today) in the late morning hours, at which time we will share whether the boil water advisory will need to remain in effect or if it can be lifted.”

“There is potential for (the lifting) to happen very soon,” Trustee Paul Wandel said at Monday evening’s Board of Trustees meeting.

Wandel said he talked to water plant supervisor Luis Fred Monday about the latest boil order situation, which started Friday.

“Basically what happened (was), with the intense rain we had last week, the turbidity levels on the raw water coming into the plant were excessively high,” the trustee said. “But I was informed by Mr. Fred, turbidity levels are normal now. He is also stocking up on two primary chemicals on that end of the plant that are necessary for separating the solids from the liquids.”

Wandel continued that Fred “is going to closely monitor the turbidity levels (in) all three sections of the plant. There’s three sections of the plant — the raw input section, there’s a midpoint, and the clear well before it exits the plant. Right now, all those readings are nominal, so that’s good news.”

Fred will also backwash filters once every 60 hours instead of once every 90 hours, in another step to fight high water turbidity, Wandel said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
