Western New York woke up to outages and damages from high winds overnight after winds reached more than 70 mph in the north county Sunday night.
There were reports of wires and trees down throughout the region since the winds started around 4 p.m. Sunday during a high wind warning. National Grid was reporting 210 outages that were affecting 4,773 customers in Chautauqua County on Monday morning.
“Some of our most volatile storms happen during this time of year, as we alternate between the remnants of winter and the advance of warmer spring-like weather,” said Tom Gozelski, National Grid New York’s Lead Director of Electric Operations. “Having one severe weather event immediately follow another is not ideal, but our crews are ready to restore service quickly and safely should we experience outages.”
Wind gust speeds, according to the National Weather Service from Sunday, include: Forestville, 74 mph at 10:44 p.m.; Dunkirk Airport, 72 at 9:44 p.m.; Fredonia, 66 at 11:40 p.m.; Ripley, 48 at 10 p.m.; Clymer, 47 at 3:30 p.m.; Jamestown Airport, 46 mph at 9:03 p.m.; and Lakewood at 37 mph around 8 p.m.
Some of the damage included downed trees at Memorial Park in the city of Dunkirk. In Jamestown, a portion of Second Street was closed from Prendergast Avenue to Foote Avenue due to a roof that blew off a building during Sunday’s wind storm.

Sunday’s winds came less than 48 hours after the first storm. Friday’s event caused more than 27,000 outages across the region, with damage concentrated primarily in Western New York; dozens of poles and transformers were replaced in response. Crews were effectively pre-staged to expedite repairs, resulting in faster, safe restoration of service.
