An unidentified man was rescued Saturday afternoon after falling through ice on a pond near a mobile home location.

The Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team was dispatched to assist the Portland and Brocton Fire Departments behind the Grapevine Estates property at 6037 Route 5 in Portland. The call came in around 12:18 p.m. Saturday. A member of the Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team was able to make it to the male and secure him in a life ring.

Members of the department, civilian bystanders, and deputies were then able to pull the man back to shore where he was treated for exposure by EMS personnel, and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Fredonia Fire Department, in a Facebook post, praised the work of Capt. Dan Aldrich, who serves as the leader of the county’s Water Emergency Team, who responded to the call.

“Cold water and ice rescues are among the most dangerous and technically demanding incidents responders face,” the post said. “They require constant training, specialized equipment, and calm, decisive leadership. Today’s outcome is a direct reflection of that preparation and skill.

“We are extremely proud of Dan’s expertise and leadership, not only in how it strengthens our department, but in how it serves the entire county — just as it did today.”

The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that this time of year ice conditions can change rapidly. If residents do venture out onto the ice, please wear a personal floatation device and check ice conditions as you go.
