School 5 maintains tradition of Read Across America

Submitted photos Carmen Andrew’s bilingual second grade is ready to listen to Dr. Seuss’ “If You Think There’s Nothing to Do.”

For many years, Connie Glasier, who served as an aide in the library, ran Community Reading Day at School 5 in Dunkirk. This event is tied to Read Across America Day, and the school schedules it near the late Dr. Seuss’ birthday. This year Glasier passed the torch to Nancy Ortiz. who is now library aide for the school.

A poem in the style of Dr. Seuss proclaims:

It’s never too cold, too

wet or too hot

To pick up a book, and

Cynthia Flaherty sits with students to read “Little Rabbit Foo Foo.”

share what you’ve got

You’re never too old,

too wacky, too wild

To pick up a book, and

read to a child.

In churches and chambers,

let’s gather round

Let’s pick up a book, let’s

pass it around

There are children around

you, children in need

Of someone who’ll hug,

someone who’ll read

So join us March 2nd in

your special own way

And make this America’s

read to Kids Day.

Some websites attribute this to Dr. Seuss himself; but Quote Investigator attributes it to Anita Merina, a staff member at the National Education Association.

Dunkirk Schools take this poem to heart. In her first year running the event, Ortiz found that Dunkirk community members answered the call to read. Retired employees of the school, including its former principal, officers from the Dunkirk Police Department, and community members all enjoyed their time with the students.

Starting at $3.50/week.
