Secondary school name changes

This artist’s rendering shows the new entrance and name.

It’s now called Dunkirk Middle and High School.

The Dunkirk Board of Education rather quietly voted to change the name of the Sixth Street secondary school at its March meeting. No one from the board commented about it, and there were also no comments from the public. The board had tabled a resolution to change the name at its February meeting.

The school was previously named Dunkirk Junior-Senior High School. It currently houses students in grades seven through 12.

This year’s successful name change process marks a contrast from a failed effort four years ago. That faltered amid community disagreement about whether to name the school after a person, and if so, which person.

Starting at $3.50/week.
