SUNY welcomes 1,000 for annual Admitted Students Day

Alumnus Nick Bernardone (’08) addresses students and parents about his SUNY Fredonia experience.

State University of New York at Fredonia welcomed nearly 1,000 prospective students and their families to campus Saturday for its annual Admitted Students Day, known as “Go Big Blue Day.”

A total of 950 guests registered for the event, including 390 admitted students, making it one of the university’s largest on-campus recruitment events in recent years.

“College is more than just classes and a degree,” said Director of Admissions Austin Brass to the audience in King Concert Hall. “It’s about finding your people, discovering your passions, and being part of a community that supports you. That is the Fredonia experience.”

The day offered future Blue Devils an immersive look at campus life as they consider enrolling for the Fall 2026 semester. President Stephen H. Kolison Jr. addressed parents and relatives during the program, sharing his experience of dropping off his own child at college.

“We will do everything we can to make SUNY Fredonia a safe place for your student, so you can be comfortable leaving them, knowing they will be supported and nurtured,” President said. “We have tremendous faculty and staff who will care for your loved one.”

The program also featured remarks from alumnus Nick Bernardone (’08), an award-winning writer and producer whose credits include work on television series such as “30 Rock,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Walking Dead.” Bernardone, who returned to campus as part of the university’s “Writers@Work” series, recalled how his experiences in Fredonia’s academic programs prepared him for his career success.

“If there is one thing I would tell my younger self sitting here today, it is this; your opportunity is not something that comes after Fredonia. It is something that starts the moment you arrive here,” Bernardone said.

“So please take advantage of what Fredonia has to offer, use the resources, find your people, and put in the work, because the version of the future you’ve dreamed about that brought you here is closer than you think.”

In addition to the main program in King Concert Hall, students and families met with faculty in their chosen academic programs, connected with current students and alumni, and explored residence halls, campus resources and student life opportunities. Attendees were also invited to submit their enrollment deposit, taking the next step toward joining the Fredonia community.

The program also included a surprise performance by SUNY senior Lucas West, who is currently competing on NBC’s “The Voice.” A Music major with a focus in Jazz Studies, West was given a standing ovation by the audience for his performance of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.”
