Fredonia shelter in place ends peacefully

The Fredonia Police Department lifted the shelter in place that was initiated around 3 p.m. Wednesday for residents on White Street around 11:30 p.m.

In a news release issued by the department, police say the incident that prompted the shelter in place has been resolved peacefully and without injuries to anyone involved and the area of White Street is safe.

“The Fredonia Police Department would like to thank the New York State Police (North Central, South Central and West SORT Team’s, BCI), City of Dunkirk Police Department, University Police at Fredonia, the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office, Chautauqua County Emergency Services Reverse 911 Notification System, and the Fredonia Fire Department and Ambulance Service,” the release stated.

“The Fredonia Police Department appreciates the support and cooperation from the community during the shelter in place.”

Fredonia Police said more information will follow pending further investigation.

It was the third time in a month that police activity led to a shelter in place alert in the north county.

On March 7, a shelter in place took place in the town of Pomfret after a man in a Westfield shooting led law enforcement on a chase. Jahmaul W. Johnson was later charged with second-degree attempted murder, multiple violent felony-class weapons charges, and multiple counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

In Dunkirk, a shelter in place occurred on March 24 after a drug raid on Franklin Avenue. A city man was later charged after gunshots were fired. An officer was struck in a bullet-proof vest in the incident and was uninjured.

Christopher Marcinkowski, 39, was later charged with first-degree attempted murder, three counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and maintaining a drug involved premises and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
