Irish dance showcase tonight at SUNY Fredonia

Submitted Photo Rince, SUNY Fredonia’s Irish Dance Club, will hold a free showcase tonight in Dance Studio 3 of the Rockefeller Arts Center. The team is comprised of nine performers of varying skill levels.

SUNY Fredonia’s own Irish Dance Club, Rince, has performed on some of the biggest collegiate dance stages in the nation. Tonight, they will be performing right at home on their own campus.

Rince Fredonia takes the stage at 6 in Dance Studio 3 of the Rockefeller Arts Center. The showcase is free of charge.

“We’re all excited,” Rince President Ally Mohrman said ahead of tonight’s performance. “It’s kind of like our finale for the semester.”

The showcase will be a mix of solo dances and team performances, featuring traditional Irish Ceilidh, a club-original choreographed performance, and dances to modern music, as well. “There is something for everyone,” Mohrman said.

Mohrman, a senior, has served as the President of Rince since she was a sophomore. Her twin sister, Makayla, serves as Vice President. Their main goals in taking over the club were to grow the team and to become officially registered with the Collegiate Irish Dance Association. As it stands now, Rince Fredonia has nine members performing, with two new members in training.

The Mohrman twins have been competitive dancers since they were children growing up in Webster, just outside of Rochester. They each still compete with a dance school in Rochester, and they are also part of a professional group that performs in the Rochester area.

At Fredonia, they take on more of a mentorship role in leading others who are less experienced. Rince is open to all levels and abilities, with some of the current members never having danced competitively before.

The club is now officially registered, and in each of the past two years, Rince made the trip to the national competition. Rince performed at the 2025 Collegiate Irish Dance Nationals in Dayton, Ohio, then again this past month for the 2026 Nationals in Madison, Wis. Rince was the only team from the state of New York to attend the national competition.

“It was a long drive, but it was really fun to bring the group that we have,” Mohrman said. “We were able to bring people who may have never thought they would get that experience to go witness an Irish dance competition for the first time. It was just fun to travel with the team somewhere that none of us had been before.”

Rince has performed on the Fredonia campus in previous years, but this is the first time this year’s team will be performing at home. Mohrman described tonight’s performance as a showcase of the work the team put on display at the national competition.

Mohrman sought out schools with a dance team when she was making her mind up which school to attend. Having Rince already established at Fredonia gave her something to look forward to once she got on campus.

“Coming in, I was really excited just to be a part of it,” Mohrman said. “It made me more motivated to be a part of things on campus, because there was something that I really enjoyed doing that I found. That’s a good thing coming in your freshman year. It made it slightly less scary.”

Rince is available for requests to perform at events in the region. Follow Rince Fredonia on Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok for more information.
