Leaders participate in “March for Meals” event

Submitted photos Participating in the “March for Meals” event included state Sen. George Borrello with Ed Pagano.

Last week, the local landscape of community service saw a distinguished group of participants as Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels hosted its annual “March for Meals” ride-along event.

A bipartisan group of local dignitaries and community leaders joined volunteer drivers to deliver nutritious meals and essential wellness checks to homebound residents throughout the area.

Participants in this year’s ride-along included Chautauqua County Clerk Gregory Carlson, Dunkirk Councilwoman Natalie Luczkowiak, Fredonia Mayor Michael Ferguson, Silver Creek Mayor Kathy Tampio, state Assemblyman Andrew Molitor, County Legislator Sandra Lewis, state Sen. George Borrello, and Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel.

The “March for Meals” is a month-long nationwide celebration of the national nutrition program for seniors. During the local ride-alongs, these officials saw firsthand that the program is truly wellness delivered, one door at a time.

For many clients, the volunteer at the door is the only person they see all day, making the wellness check just as critical as the food.

While the event celebrated the strength of the community, it also served as a reminder of the program’s unique challenges. Unlike many similar initiatives, Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels does not receive any federal funding. “Due to increased costs and stagnant government funding, contributions to Meals on Wheels would be greatly appreciated to ensure that our local residents in need are properly provided,” the organization stated.

As the “March for Meals” campaign continues, Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels is calling on the community to help bridge the funding gap to ensure no neighbor goes hungry. Contributions can be sent to 196 Newton Street, Suite 5, Fredonia, NY, 14063, or made online through the website at www.dfmealsonwheels.org.

Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels is dedicated to providing home-delivered meals and social connection to those in our community who are unable to prepare meals for themselves, helping them maintain their independence and health.
