Man charged after threats with rifle in city

A Dunkirk man is facing charges after making threats with a weapon on Tuesday evening.
Dunkirk police report Brian J. Sheldon, 55, was charged with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree menacing. Around 9:48 p.m., officers responded to several 911 calls regarding a male subject with a long gun threatening others at an address on East Pine Street.
While enroute it was relayed to officers that the subject had taken refuge in a garage with the weapon when realizing police were called. Officers arrived on scene and established a perimeter.
Officers were able to make contact with the subject, who exited the garage peacefully and was taken into custody.
In the garage officers located a rifle and loaded magazine. After investigation it was determined that the subject, identified as Sheldon, had threatened several subjects with the rifle and had dry fired it several times while pointed at the victims. The suspect also struck one of the victims in the head with the butt of the rifle, causing extensive injuries.
The victim was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries.
Sheldon was arraigned the following day and released.
