Pets die, family displaced in early morning city fire

Three pets perished and a family is displaced after an early morning fire at 122 Lake Shore Drive East in the city on Friday.

Dunkirk firefighters report at 2:13 a.m., they were dispatched to the location. Prior to arrival, additional reports for a working fire were relayed and a second alarm was dispatched. At the scene, crews encountered heavy fire conditions, and the single-family home had been evacuated.

Crews made an aggressive interior attack and were able to bring the fire under control.

After extensive overhaul operations the scene was turned over to fire investigators. One firefighter was evaluated for illness and returned to duty. Five family members are being assisted by the Red Cross.

The city of Dunkirk fire department received assistance from the Dunkirk Police Department, Fredonia Fire Department, East Dunkirk Fire Department, Chautauqua County Emergency Services, ALSTAR EMS, National Fuel, National Grid, Red Cross and Chautauqua County/ Dunkirk Fire Investigators.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
