Plan to post county elected officials’ salaries online proceeds

Chautauqua County is moving ahead with plans to publish the salaries of elected county officials on its website.

The only significant change from the original proposal is that it would be done in the fall rather than the spring.

In March, County Legislator Fred Larson, D-Jamestown, introduced a resolution that would require salaries of legislators, the executive, the clerk and the sheriff be posted on the county website by April 30 of each year.

Larson noted that all legislators, the executive, the clerk and the sheriff are getting annual raises according to the Consumer Price Index. Because of this, he feels the public should be informed annually on what elected officials are making a year.

This resolution was sent to committee for discussion. The Administrative Services Committee reviewed it this past week.

During the committee meeting, Legislator Dalton Anthony, R-Frewsburg, submitted an amended version of Larson’s original resolution.

In the amended resolution it notes that before a budget is adopted in the fall, the county legislature is required to hold an annual public hearing on the tentative budget, and the clerk of the legislature is required to include within such notice “a statement of the maximum salary … that may be fixed and payable during the ensuing fiscal year to the members of the board of supervisors and to the chairman respectively.”

That statement is generally published as a legal notice.

The revised resolution calls for the public notice, which would have the maximum salaries, to be placed on the county website.

Anthony and Legislator Bob Scudder, R-Fredonia, both had their names be added to the resolution as sponsors.

According to the resolution, as of Jan. 1, the salary of the county executive is $135,400, the salary of the sheriff is $107,425, and the salary of the county Clerk is $89,300.

Individual legislators’ base pay was scheduled to go up to $14,732, effective Jan. 1, following the 2025 election.

The full legislature will vote on the resolution at its next meeting, which is set for Wednesday, April 22.

Starting at $3.50/week.
