Healing with Horses: Bringing relief, hope to families

Bringing relief, hope to families

The hydraulic lift makes it easier for many to get on and off the horse.

What truly makes a difference in health and well-being?

Too often, we focus only on symptoms while missing the deeper causes of stress, imbalance, and discomfort. Physical and mental health are not separate issues — they are deeply connected. When one suffers, the other often follows.

For many families raising children with autism spectrum disorder or developmental disabilities, this connection is part of everyday life.

Children on the spectrum frequently experience challenges that go far beyond behavior or communication. Digestive problems, anxiety, sensory sensitivities, sleep disruption, chronic stress, and difficulties with movement or coordination can all affect daily functioning and family life. Many parents know the exhausting cycle: stress increases physical discomfort, physical discomfort increases anxiety. Digestive problems frequently enter into the discomfort, and everyone in the household feels the strain.

That is where therapeutic horseback riding can make a meaningful difference.

Movement and laughter is the best medicine.

At Centaur Stride, horses are more than recreational companions — they become partners in healing, growth, emotional regulation, and less talked about — the activation of the digestive system.

The movement of the horse gently stimulates the rider’s body in ways that encourage balance, posture, muscle engagement, and body awareness. Just as importantly, the rhythmic motion and calming environment often help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation, a main factor in peristalsis (movement of food through the digestive tract).

For children who spend much of their day overwhelmed by sensory input or stress, the experience can be transformative, literally at the gut level.

Some children begin to relax as the horse’s steady rhythm helps organize sensory input. And the benefits often extend beyond the lesson itself. Parents notice changes, sometimes before the lesson is even over, but definitely the changes in daily habits.

Centaur Stride was founded on the belief that horses and nature can enhance both physical and emotional well-being for children and adults of all abilities. The nonprofit therapeutic riding center in Sherman, New York, offers integrated and inclusive programs designed to support growth, confidence, and connection.

Families may also be relieved to learn that financial support options are available.

Some individuals may qualify for funding through OPWDD (Office for People With Developmental Disabilities). Additional support may also be available through The Resource Center’s Family Empowerment Reimbursement Program for eligible families. Certain conditions apply. For more information, contact Marcia Restivo at (716) 483-2344, ext 90020.

Centaur Stride also offers special grant-funded opportunities, including the E.A.S.E. Growth Program for children ages 5 to 21 with disabilities and their siblings. The program focuses on reducing stress for caregivers while creating meaningful experiences for the entire family.

Unlike many activities where siblings are separated or families feel isolated, the E.A.S.E. program creates a welcoming environment where everyone can participate together. Parents can connect with other families facing similar challenges, children can interact in a safe and supportive setting, and caregivers can experience something many have not felt in a long time: relief.

This two-year program is funded through the Department of Mental Hygiene, with focus on respite for caregivers, by reducing the stress related to caring for a child with a disability. Our approach is to help determine and address some of the main causes of this stress. Talking to other parents on similar journeys can also decrease stress. Educational materials or speakers who enlighten parents to what resources are available can also EASE the stress.

At its heart, Centaur Stride is about more than riding horses.

It is about helping families breathe a little easier. It is about confidence, movement, connection, and hope. It is about creating a place where children are accepted exactly as they are — and where families discover they are not alone.

Centaur Stride is currently welcoming new participants for its therapeutic riding and family support programs.
