TONAWANDA — Unified athletics is about creating opportunities and memories for students of all ages and abilities. Silver Creek Middle School students recently got to experience that firsthand.

Students from Silver Creek Middle School recently participated in a regional Unified Basketball Showcase hosted by the Special Olympics of New York in collaboration with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The event marked the first Middle School Unified Basketball Showcase in Western New York.

Silver Creek was the only school representing Chautauqua County among six participating districts, which included Iroquois, East Aurora, Eden, Sweet Home, and Amherst. In total, more than 100 students took part in the event.

Last week, students and coaches traveled to the Ken-Ton YMCA, where they demonstrated their basketball skills for peers and visited youth coaches from the Cavaliers’ organization. Activities included drills focused on dribbling, passing, and scoring.

Beyond skill development, the event emphasized the principles of Unified Sports, which bring together students with and without disabilities to compete on the same team. The program promotes inclusion, teamwork, and mutual respect while providing opportunities for all students to participate in athletics.

Silver Creek Coach Janet Decker highlighted the broader impact of the experience. “Events like this help expand inclusion, acceptance, and friendships across all ability levels,” she said. “Our middle school students were excited to participate, build their skills, and connect with new teammates.”

Students echoed that enthusiasm. Sixth-grader Noah Gonzalez said he enjoyed helping others improve their basketball skills, while classmate Cameron Halstrom noted that practicing with new friends — especially during passing drills — was a highlight of the day.

In addition to time on the court, students shared lunch and participated in recreational activities, including cornhole and card games, further strengthening connections among schools.

In preparation for the showcase, students practiced within their home districts, with Silver Creek athletes also training alongside the school’s varsity Unified Basketball team, shared with Forestville. Silver Creek currently offers several Unified Sports opportunities at the varsity level, including bocce, bowling, eSports, and basketball.

The middle school participants will continue their involvement by appearing at the Unified Basketball Senior Game on Tuesday, which will be in the Silver Creek High School Gym at 5 p.m. They will showcase their skills during halftime. Community members are encouraged to attend and support the Silver Creek-Forestville Unified team.

Starting at $3.50/week.
