Fundraiser raises six figures for Feldmann’s fight against cancer

HANOVER — Bernie Feldmann has lived a life dedicated to serving others. Now it is time for his community to pay it back, and the people have answered the call.

Feldmann was recently diagnosed with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. He is in need of alternative treatments and therapies, which are not covered under insurance. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to help Feldmann cover the cost of treatment, and the response has been dramatic. More than 700 donations were made in just over a week, with a total of $119,901 collected before the fundraiser was paused.

A statement posted on social media said the Feldmann family is “overwhelmed and humbled” by the response from the community since the fundraiser was established.

“We are absolutely blown away by everyone’s generosity and kindness,” the family stated. “To each and every one of you who has reached out with encouraging words, shared our posts, donated, dropped off meals and/or supplies, and lifted us up in prayer — thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your love, compassion, and generosity have been deeply felt and continue to carry us through this difficult time.”

Feldmann is a retired New York State Trooper who spent 28 years in law enforcement. He was at ground zero after the Sept. 11 attack. He also served as Regional Coordinator for the New York State Police Employee Assistance Program, supporting state troopers and their families during times of distress.

Feldmann has always helped whoever else he could in whatever way possible. He is deeply involved in his local parish, and serves as a Hanover Town Councilman, alongside his son, James.

Feldmann has battled cancer before, which was deemed to likely be a result of his time at ground zero. Now that he is facing aggressive Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer, the treatments Feldmann needs are not covered by insurance and will be paid out of pocket. The GoFundMe campaign is a way to provide support and ease the financial stress on Feldmann and his family.

“The support from our family, friends, and community has reminded us just how blessed we are. Every prayer, every meal, every contribution, and every act of kindness has made a difference and has given us strength and fueled our hope,” the family stated. “… Thank you for walking this journey with us and for surrounding our family with so much love.”
