Hanover water project finally reaches completion

HANOVER — At long last, the Town of Hanover has closed out the Water District 1 line replacement project. The Town recently received notice of final completion of the project, and final payment was authorized to the contractors at the latest Hanover Town Board meeting.

The project began construction in 2024 along Routes 5 and 20. The Town awarded the bid for the project to DJM Contracting Inc., of Eden, at a cost of $1,162,190. The project was supported by close to $400,000 of Rural Development funds.

A budget modification was also approved at the recent meeting to decrease the budgeted amount for Municipal Solutions by $6,313, and to decrease the budgeted amount for Hodgson Russ by $4,746 to more accurately reflect the actual costs of the project.

The project was initially left waiting for months before the Town finally got the go-ahead from contractors and the State Department of Transportation (DOT). The Town coordinated with the DOT to avoid conflicting with the lane reduction project.

Regarding another project in the town – ongoing renovations to Bicentennial Park – the Town Board approved Michael Baker, of Mike’s Seamless Gutter, to place gutters and leafguards on three areas of the pavilion and building at Bicentennial Park at a cost of $3,100.

For the month of April, the Hanover Town Clerk’s office collected $615 in revenue, stemming from issuing 41 dog licenses, 28 New York State Department of Environmental Conservation licenses, tags and permits, seven handicap tags and three marriage licenses. The Code Enforcement Office issued 29 permits in the month of April – 20 of which were in the Town, with nine in the Village of Silver Creek. A total of $2,225 was collected by the Code Enforcement Office in April.

The Town Justice Court disposed of 214 vehicle and traffic law cases, nine penal law cases, two civil cases and two environmental law cases in April for a total of $15,688 collected for distribution. The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office reported 345 deputy responses in April. The Town Board appointed a new Clerk to the Town Justice, Kaylee De La O, at a rate of $23 per hour.

The Town Board recently appointed its 2026 summer lifeguards for the Hanover Town Beach. Jorge Hasbun returns as supervising lifeguard at a rate of $21.25 per hour. Seven returning lifeguards were appointed at a rate of $19.25 per hour, including Payton Brennan, Travis Brennan, Alexander Karnes, Parker Hilmey, Kevin Murawski, Matthew Dunn, and Amber Lockwood. Two new lifeguards — Kiyah Dean and Stephanie VanCheri — were appointed at a rate of $18.50 per hour. The Town of Hanover covers the cost of certification for its lifeguards on the condition that lifeguards finish the season with the Town. Any lifeguard who does not complete the season is responsible for any payment made on their behalf.

Starting at $3.50/week.
