PORTLAND — At a recent Town Board meeting, Tammy Thompson told the rest of the Board and the public that the Portland Historical Museum will be open for the summer through Labor Day weekend.
The Portland Historical Museum features photos, antiques and memorabilia of the town dating back to the 1800s. It is located at 6224 East Main Street on Route 20. The Museum is run mostly by volunteers, including the Brocton-Portland Historical Society.
Also at the recent meeting, Rich Carpenter resigned as Deputy Dog Collector. Carpenter had been assisting Gloria McCormick with dog control duties. A resolution was also passed to allow for voluntary contributions to be collected for the town’s dog shelter as part of the issuance of dog licenses by the town.
Portland will be looking into building a minor addition to its dog shelter in order to be in compliance with new state regulations pertaining to the quarantine of dogs. Supervisor Rich Lewis spoke with a representative from CPL regarding plans for the required addition. The Board authorized Lewis to proceed with the project.
The Town Board also updated its Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Prevention policy. The standard work day for elected officials was finalized, as well.
Regarding an ongoing solar project in the town on Fay Street, Lewis plans to speak with the engineers overseeing the construction about issues with continual parking and blocking of the road. An agreement for the expenditure of highway funds was also approved.
Highway Superintendent Ken Becker said the town “did quite well” with the sale of its old highway truck declared surplus. The new truck purchased in 2026 will be delivered in the coming weeks. Becker said the Highway Department is pushing to get its largest projects this year done early to avoid escalating costs for materials and fuel.
The Highway Department will also evaluate potential grant programs to pursue a covered sand shed. Becker added that Brocton-Portland water system improvements are progressing, as well.
The next Portland Town Board meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 10 at 6 p.m. at the Portland Town Hall and Court.
