3 trustees keep Bird from DPW post

With three village trustees standing against him, and a motion to restore him failing to even get a vote, it appears the tenure of former Fredonia Department of Public Works Supervisor David Bird is finished.

Bird now has only one supporter on the board, Trustee Paul Wandel, after Trustee Jon Espersen resigned. The board voted to terminate Bird by a 3-1 vote May 11, while Espersen was out of town, just days prior to his resignation. Trustees Ben Brauchler, Christine Cruz Keefe and LeeAnn Lazarony voted to fire Bird.

Wandel attempted to get a vote on rescinding Bird’s termination at Monday’s meeting. However, it did not come up for the vote because no one seconded Wandel’s motion.

Wandel insisted on reading his resolution to restore Bird. Mayor Michael Ferguson, a Bird supporter, asked again if one of the other three trustees would second Wandel’s resolution. However, Brauchler, Cruz Keefe, and Lazarony said nothing again.

“I’d like to resurface this at a later point in time,” Wandel said. Ferguson asked for discussion, but was met with more silence.

Ferguson asked if Wandel wanted to table Monday’s resolution, or bring up a new one at a later time. Wandel said he would offer a new one in the future.

Doug Bunge took over from Bird as DPW supervisor, but then retired. Jenness Merrill has come out of retirement to head up the department.

None of the three trustees who voted to fire Bird have commented on why they did it. Wandel stated in May that while offenses such as poor behavior to residents, a truck accident and improper interpretation of a right-of-way law were alleged, the termination was really due to Lazarony’s distaste for Bird.
