A couple of Dunkirk's finest were recently honored for saving a life last year.

Fire Department Captain Tony Thomas was named Co-Firefighter of the Year by the Chautauqua County Fire Advisory Board. Retired Police Chief Chris Witkowski was presented with the Citizen of the Year Award by the Chautauqua County Fire Chiefs Association.

Thomas and Witkowski were off-duty on Nov. 14, 2025, when they responded to an incident with life-saving measures, according to local fire officials.

Thomas received his award from Tom Kolassa of the county fire advisory board. Witkowski got his from Tony Muscarella of the county fire chiefs association.

The awards ceremony happened prior to the Dunkirk Common Council meeting Tuesday.

"These awards honor two dedicated professionals who exemplify service, courage, and commitment to their community," the Dunkirk Fire Department stated in a social media post. "Their involvement in a life-saving rescue while off duty last year is a testament to their unwavering dedication to helping others."
