Malfunction of battery pack blamed in Silver Creek fire

SILVER CREEK — An accidental structure fire in the village was extinguished early Tuesday.
Just before 5 a.m., Tuesday, firefighters from the Bay-Creek Fire District responded to a house fire at 330 Central Ave. in the village.
According to a report from the Sunset Bay Fire Company, a District Chief arrived first on scene to find a working fire with heavy black smoke and fire showing from the rear of the structure. Several firefighters entered the structure and encountered heavy smoke and heavy fire in the rear room of the downstairs apartment.
Crews quickly knocked down all visible fire and started on overhaul with the fire declared out just 15 minutes after firefighters first arrived on scene. Initial reports stated the residents made it out safely.
The Forestville Fire Department provided mutual aid during the incident. Crews from Forestville, the City of Dunkirk and Evans Center assisted Bay-Creek, comprised of Silver Creek and Sunset Bay departments, with overhaul.
The Chautauqua County Fire Investigation Team was requested to the scene to conduct an origin and cause fire investigation. Investigators were able to determine that the fire started as a result of the malfunction of a re-chargeable lithium ion battery pack.
All residents of the structure were reported out safely.
