Mayville seeks Sea Lion Drive property

MAYVILLE - The village of Mayville is looking to take possession of a property that it paid to have a dilapidated house on it removed.
"Finally after 20-some years, that has been completed and torn down," Mayor Rick Syper said at the August village board meeting. "There was close to about 40 tons of house that was taken to the county landfill."
Not counting court costs, the village spent $19,257 on 199 Sea Lion Drive. The demolition was $16,325, the air monitoring for asbestos was $1,500, and the village previously spent $1,432 to board up the house.
The $19,257 was added as a lien on the property.
The property is currently owned by Ellen Shepherd. She owes $7,527 and the county is in the process of foreclosing on it for taxes owed.
The village board sent a letter to the county asking to take possession of the property for that amount.
Should that happen, Syper said the village board will need to decide if it wants to sell the property on its own, hire a realtor or do something else.
Syper said even if the county agrees to sell the vacant property to the village for $7,527, he doesn't believe the village will cover the cost it has invested in the property, but felt it was important to remove the structure. "When they tore the house down, I looked at the foundation walls. There was no saving this house," he said.
The village board was able to get the house demolished after taking Shepherd to state Supreme Court. There were multiple appearances before the judge agreed to its removal.
