Remodeling ‘on track’

New York Medical Center continues work on renovations

HANOVER -- New York Medical Center has made significant renovations to the site of the former Lakeshore Hospital site on Routes 5 and 20.

Roof work and interior remodeling has been done in anticipation of a phased opening, and it appears even more work is on its way. Substantial work appears to be in the works behind the building, as well.

So far, the most substantial renovations have come to the third floor of the building that was once Lakeshore Hospital. The ceilings, utility rooms, lounge, and laundry spaces were all recently completed, along with staff offices and a large dining room. Wiring was also installed for the building's control systems, as well as the overhead paging and sound system.

A statement regarding the site's progress posted on the New York Medical Center website stated, "Phase 1 is on track. Every ceiling tile, every camera, every finished office is one step closer to opening our doors to the families who've waited too long for care close to home."

The project has faced several delays in recent years, but the State Department of Environmental Conservation finally said it was satisfied with the capabilities of the sewer system at the facility earlier this year. Now, it is waiting for the final approval from the State to open its doors, as the Town has signed off on the project as far as it is concerned.

Once it is open and fully functioning, New York Medical Center will operate as a residential mental health and rehabilitation facility, including a total of 180 total beds -- 140 for behavioral health and 40 for substance abuse.

"I'm happy about the progress at New York Medical," said Town of Hanover Supervisor Lou Pelletter. "They are moving forward on their project."

Pelletter added the Town has recently been in contact with a developer with an interest in potentially building a hotel along Routes 5 and 20. The discussions are in the early stages.

The Town of Hanover is hopeful that a pharmacy can take over the space of the former Rite Aid in the heart of the village of Silver Creek. Since Rite Aid closed its doors due to bankruptcy a year ago, the Town has been searching for a pharmacy to take its place. Pelletter said the Town has considered every avenue, from major pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens to independent pharmacists. The need for a pharmacy in town has only intensified with the senior living facility on Main Street nearing completion.

"We're working on that," Pelletter said. "Hopefully things will fall into place."
