HANOVER -- Music can provide lasting memories. No group knows that better than Music to Remember WNY.
Sunday afternoon, Sunset Bay Beach will host a fundraiser to support memorable experiences through music for people who deserve a moment to remember as much as anyone.
Beach Bash at Sunset Bay Beach will be Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. to benefit Music to Remember WNY. The event, held in conjunction with the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame, brings some of the area's most accomplished musicians together to support the mission of Music to Remember WNY.
Buffalo Music Hall of Fame artists take the stage throughout the day, including Michael Hund, Patti Parks, The Dooleys, and Rockin Robin, the President of Music to Remember WNY. Special guest Tony Pearl also takes the stage.
Tickets are $10 at the door, with door prizes, a basket raffle, a silent auction, and a 50/50 raffle held throughout the day. All proceeds benefit Music to Remember WNY.
Music to Remember WNY is an organization that aims to bring music to facilities across Western New York, such as senior homes, memory care centers, and homes for disabled veterans and individuals with special needs, so that people who normally would not be able to access live performances can experience the power of music.
Robin Grandin, who performs as Rockin Robin, founded the organization after visiting her mother when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Robin found that performing for her mother lifted her spirits. She got her mother to sing along, even when communicating had become a challenge in everyday life.
"The music sort of perked her up and brought her back to herself," said Dave Grandin, Robin's husband.
Robin and Dave quickly learned that it was not just Robin's mother who perked up at the sound of live music. Robin performed for the other residents of the assisted living facility her mother was living in and saw the impact it had on them all.
"It seems to reinvigorate them," said Dave Grandin. "We've seen it. Our audience has seen it, including their family members and the staff at these facilities."
Over roughly nine years since, Music to Remember WNY has done a number of events and fundraisers for their cause. Music to Remember WNY partners with the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in its efforts. Some of the performers and board members of the organization are Buffalo Music Hall of Fame inductees.
Music to Remember WNY is holding the event this weekend in hopes of expanding its presence in Chautauqua County. The majority of its operations are in Erie County, although five counties have welcomed Music to Remember WNY over the past nine years, including Chautauqua County. Dave and Robin Grandin live in the Silver Creek area, and they want to expand their organization's presence in their own backyard.
"We would like the people of this area to have a better idea of what we do, and also provide an afternoon of fun where they can hear a lot of the music that our target audiences get to hear," Dave Grandin said. "We'll give everyone a taste of what the seniors, the memory care patients, and the vets get to see."
Kelly Borrello offered to host the event at her restaurant, Cabana Sam's, at Sunset Bay Beach. "We're very grateful to her. She's been a great supporter of ours through the years," Dave Grandin said.
Approximately 15 different artists are affiliated with the organization, and the partner facilities welcome the performers at no cost. Fundraising events, like this weekend's show at Sunset Bay, support the musicians who perform at the various facilities across western New York.
