Silver Creek approves new trustee

SILVER CREEK -- The Village of Silver Creek filled two boards in one meeting. The seven-member Village Planning Board was finalized by the Village Board, and Mary Poissant was appointed as a Village Trustee.
Poissant takes over for Bill Barnes, who recently resigned from the Village Board. She will finish out the year on the Board in his place, as an election will be held for the seat in November.
No stranger to Silver Creek, Poissant previously served on the Planning Board, resigning from the role in 2022. "I do know what does go on in this village," Poissant said. After listening to comments from the public and taking notes, she said she "cannot wait" to address their concerns.
After months of discussion, the Village Board selected seven members to serve on a newly configured Planning Board. The seven members will have their term lengths staggered so that one member's term will expire each year for the next seven years.
The shortest three terms go to the returning members of the Planning Board. Deanna Borrello was appointed to a one-year term; Jim Castiglia was appointed to a two-year term; and Michael Dee was appointed to a three-year term.
Four new members were appointed to the Planning Board: Michael Shearer, expiring in 2030; Kristin Pochopin, expiring in 2031; Courtney Domst, expiring in 2032; and Michelle Haskins, expiring in 2033. All seven members' terms run through Aug. 3 of the year attached to their appointment.
"I am very happy that these people agreed to serve on the Planning Board. There is a whole long list of things we've got to get working on, so I appreciate their willingness to serve," said Mayor Kathy Tampio.
Trustee Sandra Lindstrom added, "Thank you to those people who are stepping up to be on the Planning Board. It's really going to be nice to have a whole Board working together."
Silver Creek resident Anna Frederickson, a frequent guest at Village Board meetings, offered her support of Poissant and the new Planning Board members, but with a condition. They must set the standard for the rest of the village, especially when it comes to the appearance of their properties.
"I want to commend Mary for her appointment, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to keep her feet out of the fire," Frederickson said. "... I'm hoping that all the people that are appointed here keep their properties in decent shape, so that they can represent the village on the way it looks. ... When you're on this Board, you set an example."
The Board also approved Deputy Mayor Jeff Hornburg's request to use the ballpark pavilion for the Town of Hanover Republican Club Picnic on Aug. 30 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additionally, the Silver Creek Athletic Booster Club was authorized to hold the Liv Love 5K Run in the village on Saturday, Oct. 3, beginning at 9 a.m.
Tampio was authorized to sign an agreement with the State Department of Transportation in connection with work affecting State highways. The agreement is an annual commitment from the Village.
The next Mobile Food Pantry event, sponsored by the Silver Creek Food Pantry, the Village of Silver Creek, and Feedmore WNY, will be on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., at the village municipal parking lot. The event is free of charge to residents of Silver Creek and other nearby communities. The Village appreciates and welcomes all volunteers.
The next Silver Creek Village Board meeting will be on Monday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m.
