Numerous departments were at the scene of a major fire in the town of Pomfret on Wednesday afternoon.
A call came in around 12:20 p.m. that flames were seen coming through the roof of the White Village restaurant. Route 5 near the location was closed going west.
Smoke filled the area and was so thick the fire could not be seen from the opposite side of Route 5.
Scanner reports around 1 p.m. indicated the fire was still working in the dining room areas of the facility. Getting water to the location also was an issue.
Fire departments from Fredonia, West Dunkirk, Dunkirk, Sunset Bay, Stockton, East Dunkirk, Brocton, Chautauqua County Emergency Management Services and Sheridan as well as law enforcement were on the scene.
As of 1:30 p.m., crews remained on the scene to extinguish the blaze as the exterior of the building looked as though it may be destroyed. It was under control by this time.
According to a real estate listing from more than a year ago, the White Village had been a Van Buren “community staple since 1946 and owned by the same family for over 50 years.”
It was sold in September 2025 and was supposed to be getting renovated into a new restaurant.
