North County Water District board members are questioning Nestle Purina's water line usage.
Board chairman Dan Pacos opened a discussion at this month's meeting by stating he wants a meter on Purina's secondary water line. He said the line was supposed to be for fire suppression only, but is apparently "used for other purposes."
Board member Brian Purol said that no other local industry's fire protection has a water meter on it. He suggested composing an estimate of how much water goes through Purina before putting on a new meter.
"If we could figure out some kind of water loss, we could pursue that avenue before touching anything," he said.
Purol pointed out there could be a leak somewhere in the system at Purina. However, Pacos said when workers recently put a new meter on Purina's main line, both the main and secondary lines had to be shut down in order to entirely halt water flow in the plant.
"We know a lot more about what's going on there now," Purol agreed. He pronounced himself "surprised as anyone else to learn there was another line there. Nobody ever told me about it."
