The village of Fredonia plans to join the Hero Banner Program honoring local military veterans, Mayor Michael Ferguson said last week.
The nationwide program puts photographs of veterans on banners in their hometowns. The city of Dunkirk instituted a Hero Banner Program in 2023 that proved highly popular, with more than 200 banners purchased and erected.
Ferguson wants Fredonia to join the trend.
"I have two people forming a committee -- we've been talking, just trying to find time in their days to do this -- for military banners," Ferguson said Tuesday at a Board of Trustees workshop. "The question came up about military banners. Well, Fredonia has not had military banners, and it has been something that many organizations have talked about."
The mayor continued that "We have, actually, three people, after next week, that will form the committee. The families buy the banner, DPW installs them. We're going to have it planned out so that we can participate in that program, as well."
Ferguson said he would be "asking for suggestions." He figures Central Avenue would be the best place for the banners, but he asked residents to "think about where they would get the most exposure."
Ferguson also pointed out the need for standard-sized banners, instead of banners that are several different sizes.
The mayor suggested residents keep an eye on Fredonia's website or Facebook page for banner applications.
