Dunkirk's first new road in a dozen years opened last week.
Park Avenue now extends between Marsden and Newton streets. The extension was placed to make up for the closure of Main Street nearby.
Wells Enterprises asked for the closure to accommodate its expansion project. The company agreed to pay for the extension of Park Avenue in return.
The extension opened Sept. 17. City Department of Public Works Director Randy Woodbury reported on it that day at a Common Council DPW Committee meeting.
Park Avenue's new intersection with Newton has "Double stop signs in all directions because it's a new situation," Woodbury said. "This was all done with the blessing of the chief of police."
The road is 24 feet wide, except at a radius arcing out a Newton to accommodate for snowplowing. "It's so our snowplows don't dig into lawns," Woodbury said.
"It's a heavy duty road and it looks great," he concluded.
Woodbury later told the OBSERVER that the Park Avenue extension is Dunkirk's first newly constructed roadway since 2014. Progress Drive was constructed that year to connect with Roberts Road, as part of a Chautauqua County-led effort to remove a shuttered steel factory and redevelop the area.
