State of emergency declared in Mayville over transformer

MAYVILLE - A malfunctioning transformer has led local officials to declare a state of emergency in the village.
As part of the declaration, a villagewide power outage is scheduled to take place tonight.
The village of Mayville has two electric substations, one on Lakeview Avenue and the other on Patterson Street.
According to Mayor Rick Syper, on Sept. 2, some mini-transformers blew at the Lakeview substation, causing a small fire. Some residents were without power for about an hour and a half.
At Tuesday's Mayville Village Board meeting, officials approved a resolution issuing the State of Emergency.
Syper said the purpose of calling the State of Emergency is to help the process of getting it repaired quicker.
According to Syper, one northside feeder blew out. "I'm not a lineman at all, OK. ... There was a lot of bangs, a lot of black. A lot of boxes are blown apart and things went to ground that caused a fire," he said.
Looking at the substation, damage is not visible to the average person, although it's not functioning properly.
One resident captured one of the "bangs" on video, along with a burst of flames, and shared the video on Facebook.
Syper said after the fire, the village's electric crews were able to redirect power from the Patterson Street substation to restore power throughout the village.
He said it's important to get the Lakeview substation back up and running, especially if anything happens to the Patterson site.
Syper said as part of the repairs, a four-hour villagewide power outage will take place from midnight to 4 a.m. Friday.
During the power outage, officials said they hope to learn the extent of the damage and get a timeline for repairs. Officials said they want to have it fixed before winter.
