Village celebrates ‘wonderful’ Festival of Grapes

SILVER CREEK -- The 59th annual Festival of Grapes was a success. Mayor Kathy Tampio thanked everyone who was involved with the festival at a Board meeting held a day after the festival concluded.
Among those who Tampio thanked were the Festival of Grapes planning committee, the Village Department of Public Works, and the Fire Police who directed traffic.
"They did a wonderful job. They are all volunteers, and we appreciate their work," Tampio said.
This year's festivities included a youth pentathlon, a Lucy Lookalike competition in honor of Lucille Ball, and grape stomping by guests dressed in historic attire to commemorate the 250th birthday of our nation. There was also a “My Favorite Pet” contest, live music throughout the festival, local vendors, amusement rides, and a parade on Sunday afternoon to celebrate the region's rich history in grape farming.
Deputy Mayor Jeff Hornburg and Trustees Sandra Lindstrom and Mary Poissant also gave thanks to all those who contributed to the Festival of Grapes. "It was a very pleasant four days," Hornburg said.
Also of note, the Village Board recently approved the purchase of three replacement cameras and three new cameras for the Village Ball Park, Pavilion, and Salt Barn for a total of $2,600 from Doyle Security. Mary Poissant voted against the purchase after asking if the rest of the Board was sure that the three damaged cameras could not be replaced. The Board also agreed to pay $3,495 to DFT Communications for the necessary equipment for the additional cameras.
The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office reported 205 incidents for the month of August, including 38 vehicle and traffic incidents. The Village Board still holds the belief that a lower share of the cost for police protection with the Town of Hanover is warranted.
The Eden Veterinary Clinic notified the Village that it can no longer honor its contract for dog control services, effective Jan. 1, 2027. The Village will be seeking a new dog control service provider in the coming months.
The Board listened to roughly 25 minutes of public comments at its most recent meeting. Multiple residents discussed flooding concerns at various spots throughout the village. Also discussed were parking issues near Hideaway Bay, a neighbor dispute regarding smoke from a fire in a resident's yard, residents owning chickens in the village, and code violations of a property defined by Trustee Sandra Lindstrom as "deplorable".
The Village of Silver Creek Planning Board will meet on Monday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Village Boardroom. The Planning Board will meet on the fourth Monday of each month.
The next Mobile Food Pantry event, sponsored by the Silver Creek Food Pantry, the Village of Silver Creek, and Feedmore WNY, will be on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., at the village municipal parking lot. The event is free of charge to residents of Silver Creek and other nearby communities. The Village appreciates and welcomes all volunteers.
The next meeting of the Silver Creek Village Board will be held on Monday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Village Boardroom.
