An arson in the village of Fredonia last weekend is under investigation.
According to a Fredonia Fire Department news release, Chautauqua County Dispatch received notification at approximately 2:31 a.m. Aug. 29 reporting a fire in a common area of an apartment building at 39 Clinton Ave. Prior to the arrival of Fire Department units, Fredonia Police Department officers on scene removed two children from one of the apartments.
At the time of dispatch, two of the department’s three on-duty career firefighters were committed to a separate EMS call, leaving one on-duty firefighter available. That firefighter responded to the scene alone in Engine 16.
Fredonia Fire units arrived to find fire within the common area vestibule of the multi-unit apartment building. Crews initiated fire suppression operations, containing the fire and preventing extension into occupied units, while ensuring all remaining building occupants were safely evacuated. The fire was brought under control and extinguished.
No injuries to Fire Department personnel or civilians were reported. Mutual aid was provided by the City of Dunkirk Fire Department.
The Chautauqua County Fire Investigation Team responded to the scene to determine the cause of the fire. The cause was determined to be intentionally set.
