Boil order lifted in Fredonia; users still need to conserve water

1 min read

A boil order has been lifted for village of Fredonia users, but conservation of water is still being urged.

On Saturday morning, the Chautauqua County Health Department said two consecutive days of testing indicate that the water in the distribution system is safe for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth and making coffee. The filtration equipment at the water treatment plant is still under stress due to the high levels of organic material in the raw Fredonia Reservoir water.

In recent days, the water treatment plant has been able to produce water that has consistently met New York state Department of Health safety standards. In order to continue making safe water, the filters will need to maintain a steady backwashing schedule which means more of the clean water that is produced at the plant will need to be used by the plant.

In order to support the need for frequent filter backwashes residents, businesses, and institutions must continue efforts to conserve water.

The village of Fredonia will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. “Community cooperation is essential to ensuring the continued availability of safe drinking water for all,” a statement from the county noted.
