Dunkirk Middle and High School dedicates new flagpole

Dunkirk Middle and High School dedicated its new flagpole Friday.

The school replaced its flagpole during recent building renovations, and the ceremony was held just outside the newly constructed main entrance.

The school's Junior ROTC unit conducted the ceremony. It was highlighted by Ian Diaz, a seventh-grader, sharing some information he has learned about the U.S. flag.

He said the red represents valor, bravery and sacrifice. The white stands for purity, innocence and noble ideals, while blue is about American vigilance, perseverance and justice.

The 13 stripes of the flag represent the 13 British colonies that broke away to form the United States. The 50 stars represent the number of states currently in the nation.

Dunkirk City School District Superintendent Brian Swatland and School Board President Kenneth Kozlowski both attended the short dedication ceremony. Kozlowski asked the OBSERVER to point out the four American Legion members that showed up.

Several active, uniformed members of the military also attended. So did officers from the Dunkirk Police Department.

No adults spoke at the podium. They were given the opportunity to speak at the end, but everyone declined, choosing to leave the well-organized ceremony to the kids.

Starting at /week.
