Another Battery Energy Storage System developer has an eye on the area.
RWE Clean Energy is interested in erecting a BESS in the town of Pomfret, near an electric substation in Laona. Representatives from the company introduced the proposal at a Pomfret Town Board meeting.
The size of the proposed BESS itself was not specified, but it is supposed to sit on 7.7 acres of fenced-in property.
The RWE representatives said they want their necessary permissions and documents completed by the second quarter of 2028.
They offered many of the usual BESS developer talking points.
They explained how the systems support the evolving electric grid by storing energy for times of high demand. BESS fill gaps in the grid and can defer expensive energy upgrade projects, they claimed.
The developers also made sure to note the Payment In Lieu of Taxes revenue and potential Host Community Agreement funding that Pomfret would get if the BESS goes in.
In addition, they claimed that setbacks and visual screening at the BESS property would minimize its impact on nearby residents.
The RWE reps promised full commitment to Pomfret's permitting process, and also stated the company wants to partner with the Fredonia Fire Department to provide training.
Finally, they assured that RWE has done preliminary environmental studies on the site. They said that the New York Department of Environmental Conservation has ruled there are no weltlands on the property that fall under its jurisdiction.
