Saturday fundraiser supports family after fire

Imagine waking up tomorrow and everything you own is gone. No home to return to. No clothes hanging in your closet. No family photographs, cherished keepsakes, or familiar belongings that make a house feel like home.
For most of us, it is almost impossible to imagine losing everything in an instant. But for Pastor Enrique Olivio and his family, it is the heartbreaking reality they are facing.
A devastating house fire at Fifth and Canary streets in Dunkirk last month took everything Pastor Olivio and his family owned. In response, a fundraiser has been set to help the family deal with the burdens that come from the loss of their home and support them as they rebuild their lives.
On Saturday, from 1 to 4 p.m., a community fundraiser will be at Retro Vibe and Bites, located at 135 Central Avenue in Dunkirk, to benefit Olivio and his family. The afternoon will feature food, basket raffles, and an opportunity for community members to come together for a wonderful cause.
The event is not only an opportunity to help a family facing unimaginable hardship, but also a chance to check out Retro Vibe and Bites, a new local business in downtown Dunkirk. Having a new local establishment serve as the setting for an event that brings people together to help others makes the afternoon even more meaningful.
For those helping organize the fundraiser, the reason behind the event is deeply personal. An event organizer said, "I keep thinking about what it would feel like to wake up tomorrow and have absolutely nothing. No home, no clothes, no family pictures, none of the little things that make life feel normal. I can’t imagine the heartbreak this family is going through. I just know that if it were my family, I would pray that someone would care enough to help. That’s why we’re doing this.”
Organizers of the event recognize how one unexpected event can change a life forever. In moments like those, kindness can make all the difference. The fundraiser is not just about raising money, but also restoring hope, offering encouragement, and reminding a family that their community cares.
"Dunkirk and the surrounding communities have always demonstrated incredible generosity when neighbors are in need. Time and time again, people have stepped forward to donate, volunteer, and lend a helping hand," Organizers of the event said. "Now we are asking our friends, families, churches, local businesses, and neighbors throughout Chautauqua County to come together once again."
For those who would like to help but may not be able to attend, donations and raffle basket contributions are greatly appreciated. To make a monetary donation or donate a basket for the raffle, please contact Lorie Mets at 716-785-7820 or email metsmichalak@gmail.com.
