SILVER CREEK -- After countless meetings in which resident Anna Frederickson pushed for properties in the Village of Silver Creek and the Town of Hanover to be cleaned up, there has finally been some improvement.

Village Trustee Dwayne Haskins recently met with Alex Fenske, the Provisional Inspection Officer of the Town of Hanover and the Village of Silver Creek, regarding several properties in the village that were not in compliance with Village Codes. Fenske, who was hired to handle Code Enforcement duties, has compelled several property owners to remedy the situation.

"He's doing a good job getting these properties cleaned up," Haskins said.

Frederickson, a village resident who lives on Burgess Street, said she is glad to see some of the properties in the village have been cleaned up. However, there is still a lot of work left to be done. She expressed frustration with the leniency regarding building permits, which the Village Board echoed.

Also of note, following a change in April to the Village's water and sewer billing practices, customers with outstanding balances have been compelled to bring their accounts up to date. Only one customer outside of the village had their service shut off, while a few others are in the process of being paid. At the time of the resolution in April, the village was owed roughly $220,000 in unpaid water and sewer bills.

Brush pickup will continue in the village through October. The next pickup is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 19. Leaf pickup will begin in November.

The Village has contacted representatives from the offices of Congressman Nick Langworthy and Senator George Borrello regarding flooding concerns around the railroad crossing in the village. Private properties have been impacted by drainage issues around the railroad. The Village is hopeful that the railroad will remedy the situation.

The Village of Silver Creek Planning Board recently held its first meeting as a new board. Mayor Kathy Tampio and Trustees Sandra Lindstrom and Mary Poissant felt the meeting went well. The Village Board has tasked the Planning Board with reviewing several portions of the Village Code.

"I'm very happy to see everyone participate. I have hopes for a lot of good ideas coming out of that," Tampio said.

The Planning Board will meet again on Monday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Village Boardroom. The Planning Board will meet on the fourth Monday of each month.

The Village Board set Halloween trick-or-treat hours from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. The Silver Creek Kiwanis Club was authorized to hold its annual Trunk-or-Treat event on Saturday, Oct. 31, beginning at 5:45 p.m., and ending at 8 p.m.

The next Mobile Food Pantry event, sponsored by the Silver Creek Food Pantry, the Village of Silver Creek, and Feedmore WNY, will be on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., at the village municipal parking lot. The event is free of charge to residents of Silver Creek and other nearby communities. The Village appreciates and welcomes all volunteers.

The next meeting of the Silver Creek Village Board will be Monday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Village Boardroom.
