HANOVER -- When Rite Aid shut its doors in the village of Silver Creek, residents all throughout the town of Hanover were met with a significant inconvenience. The people of Silver Creek and Hanover were left without a pharmacy in town.

Since then, Hanover Supervisor Lou Pelletter and Silver Creek Mayor Kathy Tampio have consistently spoken about the need for a new pharmacy to call the area home. Pelletter recently spoke with Michael Pease, CEO of The Chautauqua Center, about expanding the center's Waterfront Pharmacy into the area. Pelletter is optimistic about what could come next.

The Town is committed to helping secure a permanent location for the Waterfront Pharmacy. Currently, the Waterfront Pharmacy operates out of The Chautauqua Center locations, including Dunkirk, Jamestown, and Forestville. Pelletter said The Chautauqua Center is open to making deliveries in Silver Creek and Hanover to residents who cannot access a pharmacy outside of the region for their medications.

The former Rite Aid building has been for sale ever since it closed due to bankruptcy a year ago. Pelletter said after speaking with Pease, the building is said to be in the stages of a sale to another buyer, but had no more information to share about the purchase. With Rite Aid off the board, the Town is looking for other locations that could house a pharmacy.

"This is going to take some time, and we'll need to work on this as a project. Everybody from elected positions are in support of the project," Pelletter said.

Pelletter has also been in contact with Municipal Solutions regarding funding avenues for water main replacements in Sunset Bay and Hanford Bay. The Town has also received estimates from Nussbaumer and Clarke, Inc., which totals roughly $6 million for water and sewer replacements throughout Sunset Bay and Hanford Bay.

"I'm not sure that we're going to be financially able to do it," Pelletter said.

Pelletter highlighted Shore Drive in Hanford Bay as the area he wants to focus on first, as there have been multiple water main breaks in that particular area in recent years.

The storm sewer replacement at Glenwood Cemetery along Old Main Road and Route 20 is set to begin in early November. Pelletter hopes the work will be completed before the winter. The project bypasses the original line for drainage that dates back to the 1800s. Tim Nearhoof with Double A Specialties Inc. is handling the project at a cost of $44,000. The Town Highway Department will provide the pipes and gravel.

Pelletter said the Town will be retaining an attorney to represent its interests regarding road repairs stemming from the windmills. The Town still has three roads in need of repair, and Pelletter said the negotiations are "so far apart on the money" with damage he described as "extensive".

The Town Boat Launch will be kept open later than usual this year, potentially into late November, weather permitting. Town Board member Ed Schintzius pushed to do so because of the benefit to local restaurants, such as Aunt Millie's and Tom's Family Restaurant. "It's bringing a lot of money into the restaurants and businesses in the town," Schintzius said.

Also of note, the Town of Hanover Veterans Memorial statue is nearly complete. It will be located outside of the Town Hall and Court once it is finished. The Town will dedicate the statue on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, beginning at 1 p.m.. The ceremony is open to the public.

The Town of Hanover was recently awarded a $10,000 grant from the New York Rural Water Association (NYRWA) thanks to Town Clerk Elizabeth VanCheri fulfilling ethics coursework and submitting the grant application.

Additionally, Court Clerk Kaylee De La O was authorized to attend the New York State Web DVS training at the Erie County Courthouse in Buffalo on Nov. 10. The Board also voted to remove an outstanding water account balance of $303.89 on a Forestville property recently sold at the Chautauqua County Tax Auction.

The next regular Town Board meeting will be held on Monday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m., at the Hanover Town Hall.
