Dr. Marvin C. Zastrow
Marvin Charles Zastrow, 88, of Dunkirk died peacefully at home Monday, June 22, 2015. Marvin was born January 11, 1927 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Otto and Adele (Mundt) Zastrow.
After serving in World War II, Marvin attended the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee; Marvin also earned a Master’s Degree in mathematics from Marquette University, a Master’s degree in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana, and a PhD from Northwestern University. Marvin taught at the State University of New York College at Fredonia over thirty years. There he had high expectations of his students. His unconventional teaching methods and high standards earned him a reputation around campus. He was both feared and revered and many students found him unforgettable.
Marvin was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dunkirk, N.Y. There he served as a member of the Church Council, lay leader, Sunday school teacher, usher and reader. Marvin was an avid bowler. He also enjoyed traveling across the United States, vegetable gardening, and watching his favorite teams, the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughters Laurel, Melissa and Marcy; sister LaVerne Sandrock of Philomath, OR., and grandchildren Christopher, Christina, and Luvlee.
