Michael N. Grasso

Michael Nicholas Grasso, formerly of 15 Birchwood Drive, Fredonia, New York, entered into rest on June 30, 2015, in Lyons, New York, after an extended illness.

Beloved husband of the late June (LaChance) Grasso. Devoted father of Junemarie (Mitchell) Gerstein, Michael (Deborah) Grasso and Richard (Gwendolyn) Grasso; cherished grandfather of Christopher (Tabitha) Grasso, Andrew Paul Canedo, Laura Grasso, and Mary Grasso; step-grandfather of Amalia (Jose) Orduna, Angela Maturo, and Lawrence Maturo. Adored great-grandfather of Caden Grasso, Michael Nicholas Grasso, RJ, Rheyenne, Braylon, and Giovanni. Professor Grasso was born November 9, 1931 to the late Anthony and Mary (Pacillo) Grasso in Lackawanna, New York. Dear brother of the late Dr. Anthony (Rosemarie) Grasso, Dr. Robert (Carol) Grasso. Survived by brothers Dr. Thomas (Carola) Grasso and Lawrence (Bill Clar) Grasso, and dear sister Joanna (William) Swiercz. Professor Grasso earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees of physics at the University at Buffalo. He married his high school sweetheart June LaChance on June 13, 1953. Michael began teaching at SUNY Fredonia in 1959, where he taught physics until his retirement in 1994. He held the position of chairman of the physics department. Professor Grasso developed the Co-operative Engineering program at Fredonia State. He encouraged many students to pursue a career in engineering or physics, and followed students with their successful professional careers. Michael was also a member of the Italian-American Society and former committee member of the Fredonia Farm Festival. Michael also won numerous awards for his beautiful flower gardens at his home on Birchwood Drive. Those who knew Mike enjoyed his love of cooking. No one left his home hungry. He loved to celebtate holidays with his family, especially Christmas. Mike made the best Christmas cookies from his mother’s recipes. He was called “Pops’ by his grandchildren and he will be sadly missed by Andrew and Laura, whom he helped raise. Relatives and friends may visit the Lombardo Funeral Home (Southtowns Chapel), 3060 Abbott Road near Lake Avenue today from 3-7 p.m.A funeral service will be celebrated Friday morning at 11 o’clock. Beloved husband of the late Irene Elizabeth “June” (nee LaChance) Grasso; devoted father of June Marie (Mitchell) Gerstein, Michael (Deborah) Grasso and Richard (Gwendolyn) Grasso; cherished grandfather of Christopher (Tabitha) Grasso, Andrew Paul Canedo, Laura Grasso, Mary Grasso, Amalia (Jose) Orduna, Angela Maturo and Lawrence Maturo; great-grandfather of Caden, Michael, RJ, Rheyenne, Braylon and Giovanni; loving son of the late Anthony and Mary Grasso; dear brother of Dr. Thomas (Carola) Grasso, Lawrence (Bill Clar) Grasso, Joanna (William) Swiercz and the late Dr. Anthony (Rosemarie) Grasso and Dr. Robert (Carol) Grasso.

He was called “Pops” by his grandchildren and he will be sadly missed by Andrew and Laura, who he helped raise. Further survived by relatives and friends.

Relatives and friends may visit the Lombardo Funeral Home, (Southtowns Chapel), 3060 Abbott Road near Lake Avenue on Thursday from 3-7 p.m.

A funeral service will be celebrated Friday morning at 11 o’clock. Entombment Holy Cross Cemetery.
