Lucille A. Gillson

Lucille A. “Lulu” Gillson, 80, of Dunkirk died Wednesday night (April 20, 2016) at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk with her daughter by her side.

She was born July 7, 1935 in Dunkirk, the daughter of the late Nicholas Nasca and Anna (Petz) Nasca Centner.

A member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Dunkirk, she was also a member of the American Legion Post 62 Auxiliary and the Dunkirk Elks Lodge No. 922.

Survivors include one daughter, Shari L. (Patrick Moscato) Roof of Dunkirk; two sons, Gary Gillson of Gilbert, AZ, and Jeff Gillson of Glendale, AZ; one sister, Carol (Dave) Wilder of Haymarket, VA; nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clement R. Gillson, who died Jan. 1, 1993; and two brothers, Leonard Nasca and Arthur Centner.

For more than 40 years, Lulu enjoyed a wonderfully fulfilling career as a crossing guard in the Dunkirk School District. For decades she guided students to and from school, often meeting the children of those she crossed years before. Her biggest joy, above all else, came from spending time with her family. Lulu adored her family. She loved to be around people. One of her favorite things to do was have coffee with the girls. She loved conversation; to laugh and joke, and to soak up the good times with her friends and family. And shop. She loved to shop. Especially for shoes, purses and earrings, lots of earrings. Lulu will always be remembered as the short, feisty, Italian woman with a fun personality and a smile that could light up a room. One of her most admirable qualities was her true love and devotion to her husband, Clem Gillson. She showed such love, strength, and adoration during his sickest days throughout his lengthy illness. That type of faithfulness is both inspiring and enviable. You will be missed, Lula.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Monday morning at 10 o’clock in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Calling hours will be held today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. Burial will be in Willowbrook Park Cemetery.
