Frederick Moritz Jr.

GOWANDA — Frederick Moritz Jr., age 93, passed away at the Hospice of Buffalo Palliative Care Facility early Thursday morning. Dec. 23, 2016.

Fred, a long time resident of Gowanda, was born May 21, 1923 in Collins, NY. He was the son of the late Frederick Sr. and Minnie (Reid) Moritz.

Fred was a graduate of Gowanda High School and Amarillo Technical Institute. He was an Army Air Corps Veteran and honorably served his country during WWII. He received an American Service Medal along with a WWII Victory Medal. While in the service, Fred was the Army Air Corps Golden Gloves Champion. Memberships include the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Phoenix Lodge #262 F&AM of Gowanda, NY, State Harness Racing Association, US Trotting Association and the American Game and Fowl Association.

Prior to Fred’s retirement, he owned the Brocton Theatre, worked as a salesman for the former Peter Cooper Glue Corp of Gowanda, and was a sales manager for Fleetwood Chemical along with the Vineland Chemical Company. He purchased the Palm Gardens Motel and Restaurant in 1978.

Fred married the former Margaret Luechauer on June 19, 1960 in Hamburg, NY. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years.

He is also survived by his son, Derek (Kimberly) Moritz of Gowanda and his daughter, Charisse (William) Sprague, also of Gowanda. His five grandchildren include Bryna (Cory) Moritz Booth of Randolph, Devon Sprague of Buffalo, Tallon Moritz of Jacksonville, Damen Sprague of Jacksonville, and Tianna Sprague of Gowanda. Greatgrandson Blake Booth was Fred’s great joy in the last years of his life.

Besides his parents, Fred is preceded in death by a brother, Warren Moritz.

As per Fred’s request, a private service will be held by the family.
