Virginia Surlas

Virginia Surlas died June 11, 2017 in the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk, NY.

She was born April 15, 1928 in Dunkirk, NY, the daughter of the late Gus T. and Bessie Surlas.

Virginia was a graduate of Dunkirk High School and SUNY at Fredonia. She had been employed at Brooks Memorial Hospital until her retirement; Virginia had also been an avid member of the Dunkirk Club, until its dissolution.

Virginia and her mother, before her passing, traveled extensively, having visited Greece and other European countries, Mexico and Hawaii, as well as frequently traveling to New York City to shop and enjoy the theater.

Virginia was proud of her Greek ancestry and enjoyed reminiscing about the “good” o’le Dunkirk days. She especially enjoyed reflecting on Candyland, the popular ice cream shop owned by her father.

Surviving Virginia are her cousins Marcia (Surlas) Organ, Melinda (Organ) Brennan, Joseph Organ Jr., Jeffrey (Robert) Surlas, and Timothy Surlas, none of whom reside locally.

Virginia had a wealth of friends, who she considered family, and she kept in touch with them faithfully.

A funeral service will be held at St. John the Baptist (Episcopal) Church in Thursday, June 15 at 1 p.m. Father Christos Christakis will officiate at a Greek Orthodox funeral service.

Donations in Virginia’s memory can be made to St. John the Baptist (Episcopal) Church, P.O. Box 14, Dunkirk.

Arrangements are by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home.
