Evelyn Marie Ogden

Evelyn Marie Ogden, age 98, passed away Sunday, August 27, 2017. She was born July 1, 1919, at her grandparents’ house in Arkwright, NY.

Evelyn was the beloved wife of Raymond Wilson Ogden, having celebrated 60 years of marriage before his passing in 2001.

Mrs. Ogden was the cherished mother of the late Raymond W. Ogden II, (Gladys) of Dunkirk, Lynn LaMattina-Ford (Bruce Ford) of Fredonia and Faith (Ronald) Lesandro of Hamburg.

She was the loving grandmother of Robert (Elizabeth) Ogden of Horsham, England, Danyel (Scott) Murphy of Buffalo, Michael (Waiyen) Ford of Danville, Virginia, Mathew Ford of Danville, Virginia, Kristin (Daniel) Sym of Severn, Maryland, Ryan (Emily) Lesandro of Lake View and Katelyn (Ryan) Springer of Hamburg.

Mrs. Ogden was also a beloved greatgrandma to Benjamin, Martha and Tobias Ogden, Isabella and Aiden Ford, Kennedy Hurley and Zeya Salamone, Connor and Aaron Sym, Margo Springer and twins, Carter and Hunter Lesandro.

In addition to her husband and her son, she was preceded in death by her parents, David and Frances (Standish) Raymond of Fredonia; her sister, Julia Uli, of Chicago; and brothers David Raymond Jr. of Fredonia and Raymond Raymond of Frewsburg.

Mrs. Ogden was raised in Fredonia on Water Street and was a graduate of Fredonia High School in 1937. While a student there, she was very involved in sports and earned “letters” and awards. After high school, she went to Buffalo for the first time to attend Meyer Memorial Hospital Nursing School, where she earned her degree as a Registered Nurse in 1940. On September 28, 1940, she married Raymond W. Ogden. Evelyn and Ray built their own home in Dunkirk, where they raised their family and became involved in the community.

She was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 258 and the Past Matrons, maintaining several offices over the years. In 1970, she served as Grand Chaplin OES State of New York. Mrs. Ogden also held supportive offices in Masonic organizations her children were involved with — the Order of DeMoley and Constellation of Junior Stars. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout leader for many years. She served on the Brooks Memorial Hospital Board and Auxiliary and the American Red Cross. She was a charter member of the Four Seasons Garden Club and an active member of the Dunkirk United Methodist Church. Mrs. Ogden worked as a private duty RN until her retirement in 1981. The Ogdens then spent their winters in Naples, Florida.

She enjoyed gardening, traveling, square dancing with her husband, knitting, and reading. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, who will miss her smile, humor, caring ways and wisdom. Her love, however, will always be with them.

Calling hours at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home in Dunkirk will be Thursday, August 31, 2017, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Eastern Star services will be conducted at 7 o’clock. Funeral services are Friday morning at 10:30. Pastor Clifford Cliver will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, to honor the loving and unselfish spirit of Mrs. Ogden, a memorial gift to an organization that makes the world a better place is suggested. The following are a few that Mrs. Ogden personally supported: the Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Florida 33607 (www.shriners hospitalsforchildren.org), the American Red Cross, 786 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14209 (www.redcross.org), and the Lakeshore Humane Society, 431 E. Chestnut Street, Dunkirk, NY 14048 (www.lakeshore humanesociety.org).
